While other games in the Dota genre have removed the LAN function, Valve is poised to add LAN functionality in Dota 2. Valve Corporation has been known to add value to it's games by retaining LAN even when other major game developers have removed it citing widespread software piracy.
Dota 2 as an eSport
Dota 2 is being groomed to become the biggest eSport in history and with the absence of LAN in Starcraft 2, there is a huge possibility that Dota 2 will overtake Blizzard's Starcraft II - Legacy of the Void in terms of player count around the world.

Dota 2 in Asia
DotA has the largest playerbase in Asia wherein the player numbers eclipse both World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 combined.
The Chinese have major DotA tournaments like the WDC (World DotA Championship) while the Malaysians have SMM (Sendi Mutiara Multimedia). The Asian Cyber Games (WCG Asia) have also featured both DotA and Dota 2 in it's tournaments and the game has been one of it's biggest crowd drawers.
What is LAN?
LAN is the acronym for Local Area Network - a network that connects multiple computers in a limited area. This is the most common set-up for gaming centers around the world. Games like Starcraft Broodwar and Counterstrike established a huge playerbase thanks to LAN.
Will Dota 2 have LAN? Yes, Dota 2 will have LAN support.
It would be a mistake if it didn't.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Erik Johnson: Dota 2 will have LAN mode. There are some systems that LAN mode requires that we haven't finished yet, mainly because we've been focused on matchmaking. We know how important this feature is for the community.
